Cultural Property of Murayama City - Natural Monuments & Protected Species

Japanese Serow

This species of serow is unique to Japan and it is a symbol of the Yamagata prefecture. Besides the Hokkaido and Chugoku area, the serow also inhabits the mountain ranges of Honshuu, Shikoku and Kyushu.

Reclining Dragon Pine Tree

A red pine tree in the shape of a reclining dragon. Its roots spread 3m wide, and the base has twisted and grown diagonally. It is 5m tall and brances spread out 18m from east to west and 20m from north to south. The three is estimated to be 450 years old.

Ranzania Japonica

First discovered in Yamagata in 1927 on the east side of Mt. Hayama, along the upper stream of the Tominami-gawa river.

Starfish Fossil

A near-perfect fossil of a starfish from the Neogene period (23.03 to 2.58 million years ago). Between two of its opposing legs, the starfish measures 37.5cm in width.

Japanese Zelkova Trees at the Atago Shrine

A collection of 12 Japanese Zelkova trees in varying sizes ranging from 50 to 300 years in age.

Great Cedar Tree of Okumansama

This tree is on of the prefecture's oldest, with an estimated age of 850 years. The circumference of the trunk is 7.2m at eye height, the roots spread 8.15m wide and the tree is 48m tall.

Cedar Tree of Yoriyoshi

The tree is estimated to be 900 years old. The trunk's circumference at eye height is 6.5m, its roots spread 7.5m wide and it is 23.51m tall.

Pine Tree of Onoe

A famous and elegant tree that is said to be 600 years old. The base circumference at eye height is 3.45m, its roots a 3.85m wide and the tree is 20m tall.

Sankichi Cedar Tree of Mt. Sankichiyama

An old cedar tree with roots spanning 6m. At 1.5m heigth the tree trunk splits into two, with one trunk being 2.35m in circumference and the other one 3.85m in circumference. Another 1.5 higher up, the trunk splits into another two tree trunks.

Camelia Japonica of Yamanouchi

A rare and old tree which is about 2m in height. Its branches are 9 meters wide from east to west and 7.5m wide from north to south.

Great Japanese Zelkova Tree of Tateoka Baba

A tree believed to be 500 years old. Its trunk is 4.65m in circumference at eye height, its roots are 6.8m wide and the tree is 25m tall.

Prunus Buergeriana of Hachimansama

A southern species of Sakura (cherry blossom tree). The tree trunk has a 1.8m circumference at eye height, a 2.5m root width and is 12m in height.

Great Cedar Tree of Hakusan-jinja Shrine

One of the biggest trees in Murayama City. The trunk is 5.7m in circumference at eye height, its roots are 8.8m wide and the tree is 35m tall.

Japanese Yew Trees of Kouyou-ji Temple

A pair of extraordinarily well-shaped historical yew trees. The tree on the right is 1.2m tall and spans 4.7m from east to west and 7.9m from the north to south. The tree on the left is 1.3m tall and spans 7.5m from east to west and 10.1m from north to south.

Beech Trees of Tateyama

It is very rare to find a beech tree forest at a low altitude location like Tateyama (100m). While the seedlings are 30cm tall, the full grown trees are 18m tall. Some of the trees are thought to be 100 years old.
